Glennie Wesley Murray, Sr., 81, entered into eternal rest on the morning of September 20, 2009, at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services will be held in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road, N. Charleston Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at three o’clock. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Friends may call at Stuhr’s Northwoods Chapel Tuesday between five and seven o’clock. Born March 14, 1928, in the Lebanon community of Berkeley County, Glennie was a son of Quillie W. and Thelma I. Murray. Following his graduation from Murray Vocational High School in Charleston, he served in the U.S. Army from 1950-53. He later earned his undergraduate degree from The Citadel, with graduate degrees to follow from Appalachian Teachers College and Western Carolina University. Glennie devoted his life to the education of children, serving as Teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal of Murray Vocational High School, as well as Guidance Counselor and Principal of St. Andrews Junior High School. In addition, he served in the Director roles of Charleston County Middle Schools, Charleston County High Schools, and Charleston County Adult Education. Realizing that his love for children was the reason he entered the education field, Glennie returned to the classroom as Principal of Alice Birney Middle School, where he “retired” in 1986. He continued in the educational field in his retirement, serving as an Interim Principal at multiple schools, as well as working with Charleston County’s Adult Education program. Glennie also served as President of the South Carolina Education Association. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sally R. Murray of Hanahan; daughter, Renee M. Moeller and husband, Michael, of Hanahan; sons, Glenn W. Murray and wife, Carole, of Little Mountain, SC, Mark R. Murray and wife, Karen, and Richard K. Murray and wife, Martha, both of Hanahan; grandchildren, Anne Murray, Emily Moeller, Grace Murray, Jacob Murray, Madison Moeller, Chase Murray, Payne Murray, Ashley Rowell, Matthew Murray, Vance Rowell and William Murray; and a sister, Jean Johnson of Goose Creek. He was preceded in death by his sister, Juanita Lee and brother, Wendell Murray.
