Glenn Adger Whittington, Jr., 82, passed away on June 11, 2012, at Dade City Hospice Care Center in Dade City, Florida. He was born on August 29, 1929 in Darlington, South Carolina to Glenn Adger and Leota Humphries Whittington. Glenn grew up in Trilby, Florida. He graduated from Pasco High School in Dade City, Florida in 1947. After high school he attended college at The Citadel Military College in Charleston, South Carolina where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Glenn joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War as a Captain in The Corps of Engineers. While serving In the United States Corps of Engineers he oversaw the construction of the NASA launch pads at Cape Canaveral, Florida. He began work for Sperry Rand Corporation in Gainesville, Florida. He was an engineer and he worked on the development of the Klystron tube, forerunner of all microwave and satellite technology. He was supervisor of 32 engineers. He was also instrumental in the development of satellite communications at Scientific-Atlanta at Atlanta, Georgia where he helped develop the first satellite for Ted Turner. Glenn held five patents in robotic automation control. He developed a part for the robotic arm of the space station. He was member of the Association Old Crows (Strategic Air Command (SAC) as Electronic Countermeasures (ECM). Glenn married Charlotte Tomkow in 2007 in Trilby, Florida. They were happily married for five years. Glenn was an active contributor of railroad artifacts to the Florida Pioneer Museum. He formed and taught classes on the Constitution of the United States and the Federalist Papers. Glenn enjoyed United States History, genealogy, hunting, sailing, Italian sports cars, world traveling and tinkering with electronics. Glenn was preceded in death by his wife Marianne Elizabeth May, his parents Glenn A. Whittington and Leota Humphries and his brother Claude Arthur Whittington. Glenn is survived by his spouse Charlotte Tomkow Whittington of Trilby, Florida, his sons: Glenn Adger (Xue Fang Li) of Tony, Alabama, Phillip Trent (Susan Romano): Phillip James, Tristan Gabriel, Trent Alexander of Citra Florida, Timothy Hancock of Snellville, Georgia: Glenn Adger, Mary Beth, Ryan Mitchell and his daughter Martha Jewel of Atlanta, Georgia. Also his step children, Francine Hancock, Ann Johnson, Lisa Hinton, Beth Tomkow, and Frank Tomkow. His constant cat companion Bee Gee also survives him. A visitation will be held at Hodges Funeral Home, 14046 5th Street, Dade City, FL 33525 5-7 PM, Friday, June 15. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on June 16th At Trilby Cemetery, Trilby Cemetery Road, Trilby, Florida. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made in memory of Glenn Adger Whittington to The Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409.
