Gilbert A. Hoffman, Jr., 86, of Longwood Drive in Orangeburg, passed away Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2008, at Longwood Plantation. Funeral services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Larry Williams officiating. Pallbearers will be Bob Ayers, Richard Stroman, Earl Whalen, and members of the Wendell Love Sunday School Class. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Hoffman was born in Orangeburg, the son of the late Gilbert A. Hoffman and Gertie Dukes Hoffman. He was a proud graduate of The Citadel where he served on the boxing team. As a career he chose education where he loved and inspired many children, and was a former member of the S.C. Education Association and served on the S.C. Board of Education. He also believed in service to his church and the city, state, and national government. At First Baptist Church he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and on many committees throughout the years. His civic service included the National Guard, where he was a life member, the Orangeburg County Election Commission and the American Legion. Mr. Hoffman was a US Army Veteran in WWII, member of the SC National Guard and served as Colonel in the US Army Reserve. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eleanor Baggott Hoffman. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, James B. and Trudy Draughn, Brandon, MS; two grandchildren, Eleanor Hoffman Draughn, Chantilly, VA, and James B. Draughn, III, Atlanta, GA; and two great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home.
