George Pierce Hammett, Jr. of Belton, SC, the husband of Icey Longshore Hammett, died March 16th at the home. Mr. Hammett was born in Anderson, SC, on July 10, 1918, a son of George Pierce Hammett and Rosa Lee Deberry Hammett. Mr. Hammett attended Anderson City Schools and was a 1939 graduate of the Citadel in Charleston, SC. He was a pilot in the Army Air Corps in World War II, serving in the African-European Theater. After the war he received a ten year pin as paymaster at Orr Mills in Anderson, and then was a Ford Dealer in Belton for 28 years. He was a member of the Anderson Airport Commission and served as a member of the Belton Election Commission for a number of years. He was a School Trustee of Belton School District 2, Anderson County, and was a member of Belton Presbyterian Church where he had served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. Also he was a member of the Lions Club for a number of years. He delivered Meals-on-Wheels for more than ten years and was one of the founders and supporters of the Belton Farmer’s Market. Mr. Hammett is survived by his wife and sons, George P. Hammett III and Arthur Ray Hammett and two grandchildren, Andrew M. Hammett and Sara H. Mears. He is also survived by nieces, Elizabeth Moore and Deborah Slice and nephew, John Moore. His beloved sister, Jane Moore, predeceased him.
