George Michael Taggart, age 64, of New Windsor, MD passed away at his home on Saturday, December 25, 2021. Born April 18, 1957, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, MD, George was the son of the late Hugh Thomas Taggart and Rachael Gonzales Taggart of New Windsor. He was the husband of Joanne E. Taggart, his wife of 40 years. Also surviving are his sons, Hugh Thomas, Paul Donaldson, George Michael and wife, Kari, Steven Andrew, and John Paul. George had an interest in animals in his early years and he was active in the 4-H Clubs Youth programs, raised and showed sheep and was a livestock judge. He also collected comic books and later went on to own comic bookstores in Gettysburg and Hanover, PA. He graduated from Francis Scott Key High School in Carroll County, MD in 1975 and then attended the Citadel in Charleston, SC on a Reserved Officers Training Corp (ROTC) scholarship. He graduated from the Citadel with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1979. While attending the Citadel he attained a position on the Citadel’s elite Junior Sword Drill team and performed at the Miss America pageant. George served in the United States Army from 1979 to 1985 and was stationed at Fort Meade, MD, followed by a duty station with the Army Corp of Engineers in Jacksonville, FL. While living in Jacksonville, he earned a Master’s degree in Business. He left the Army with the rank of Captain and was employed by C&P Telephone Company for 13 years. At C&P Telephone, he was responsible for overseeing the construction and maintenance of buildings in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. George worked at Century High School for over 17 years and taught Physics and Technology Education. In addition, he coached the junior varsity girls’ soccer team and was affectionately known as “Coach Tag”. George’s hobbies and interests included reading, strategy games and doing puzzles. Other survivors include his sister, Anne Louise Taggart of Annapolis, brothers, Richard Patterson Taggart of New Windsor, and Hugh Thomas Taggart Jr. and wife Linda of Dagsboro, DE, and 2 nephews and 3 nieces. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clark E. Taggart in October 2021. The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor on Thursday, December 30 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., where a Christian Wake service will be held at 7:45 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 31 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 44 Frederick Street, Taneytown, MD. Father Mark Bialek will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in Pipe Creek Cemetery. Masks are recommended at the funeral home and church. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established.
