George I. Boniface, 93, of Mount Pleasant, SC, died on Thursday, November 20, 2025. He was the founder and CEO of Carolina Foreign Exchange which he operated in Charleston from 1989-2003.
Mr. Boniface was born on February 21, 1932 in Charleston, SC. He attended The Citadel and after graduation, served eight years in the US Army. After leaving active duty, he worked for Pan American Airlines Aerospace Services Division at Cape Canaveral, FL. He later joined Ling Temco Vought in the South Pacific where he was supervisor of Missile Test Operations for missiles targeted into the Kwajalein Lagoon from Vandenberg AFB, Cal.
In 1965, he returned to Charleston to join Avco Lycoming in Aerospace Marketing. He headed the metro Charleston 1968 presidential election campaign for Richard Nixon and later moved to Washington to serve in the Nixon Administration as an international trade representative promoting US exports.
Mr. Boniface returned to Charleston in 1989 to open Carolina Foreign Exchange. Following the sale of the business in 2003, he became active in the Foreign Affairs Council of Charleston, serving on the Board of Directors as well as Secretary. He also served as a state delegate to the US Global Leadership Coalition, an NGO in Washington that lobbied Congress on behalf of the US State Department. He remained a member of both until his passing.
A loyal Citadel alumnus, Mr. Boniface served as reunion chairman for his Class of 1954 for many years.
He is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Boniface of Portland, OR and Elizabeth Ryan of Atlanta, GA; four grandsons, Cody Hermeling of Portland, OR, Dr. Tim Ryan and Jeremy Ryan of Atlanta, GA, and Gabriel Ryan of McLean, VA; and granddaughter, Kristen Pearson of Aldie, VA.
He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Roxanne Boniface of Sewall’s Point, FL and is appreciative of their kind attention and support for many years. Other survivors include a cousin, Col. Irvind Borgen, USA (Ret.) of Charleston, who is more like a younger brother than a cousin. Other survivors include two great granddaughters and eight nieces and nephews.
Mr. Boniface expressed grateful appreciation to his stepdaughter Kelly Carr of Charleston and Washington, D.C., for her devoted care and assistance while also serving as a liaison with other family members in his final years.
Burial will be private. Inurnment will be in the columbarium in The Citadel Bell Tower.
