George Edward Newton, 79, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, husband to Judith Kossler Newton for 51 years, entered into eternal rest on April 01, 2022, surrounded by his family. George was born on March 22, 1943, in Atlanta, Georgia; he was the son of the late James Henry Newton and Vesta Overton Newton. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1965 with a degree in Electrical Engineering, attended the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA, the following year, and received his MBA from the Citadel in 1974. George served in the United States Navy Supply Corps for 28 years. His assignments included: Supply Officer aboard the USS Nantahala (AO-60), Assistant Supply Officer, USS Orion (AS-18) and Supply Officer, USS Dixon (AS-37). He served in the Atlantic Fleet Polaris Material Office, in Naval Support Activity and the Naval Advisory Group in the Republic of Vietnam, as staff at the Navy Supply Corps School, in the Naval Electronics System Command Headquarters in Washington, DC, and as Staff of Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, in Norfolk, VA. He served at the Naval Supply Center in Charleston, SC, (1972-1976) and again as Supply Operations Director and an Executive Officer (1987-1992). George was a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels for over 25 years and served on the board that planned the Greater Charleston Navy Base Memorial in North Charleston, SC. George (Cappy) was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his wife, Judith K. Newton, he is survived by his four children: Ursula Newton Rossman (Matthew), Jessica Newton Hernandez, James Matthew Newton (Nitta), and Benjamin George Newton (Katie); and his nine grandchildren: Gus, Evelyn, Gabe, Dominick, Isabella, Sophia, Ben, Jonah, and Elsie. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2022, 10:00 AM, at Summerall Chapel – The Citadel, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in George`s memory may be sent to Meals on Wheels of Mount Pleasant.
