Gary L. Pruitt, ’74

Gary Lewis Pruitt, husband of Ellen Grisillo Pruitt, entered into eternal rest on January 18, 2024. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, January 30 at 2:00 pm in Saint Andrew’s Church at 440 Whilden St. Mount Pleasant. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in Sam’s Hall. Burial with military honors will be held at Mt Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel.

Gary was born December 11,1947 in Griffin, Georgia, the son of Lewis W. Pruitt, Jr. and Boyd N. Pruitt. His family moved to Charleston, South Carolina when he was 14 years old. He was a 1966 graduate of Garrett High School and attended Baptist College to hopefully avoid the draft; it did not work. He was drafted into the Army infantry in 1968 and served with the 173rd Brigade in Vietnam. Upon returning home he attended The Citadel and graduated in 1974. He then joined the Army National Guard, and served with distinction, eventually attaining the rank of Command Sergeant Major, with the First Battalion 118th Infantry prior to his retirement. After graduating from The Citadel, Gary entered the real estate appraisal business and attained the MAI designation. Prior to his retirement he was a partner with Atlantic Appraisals in Mount Pleasant. He was a member of the North Charleston Breakfast Rotary for over 20 years and served as the club treasurer for 8 years. He was also a longtime member of the Washington Light Infantry (WLI). Gary was a proud member of Christ’s Church Anglican, Mount Pleasant, and dearly loved his church family and all of his clergy. He served on the church vestry and as a Stephen minister and chaplain visitor. Gary was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing with the Snee Farm League and his longtime group “The Tallywackers”. He especially enjoyed days when he took money from his friend Boze.

Gary is predeceased by his parents, Lewis W. Pruitt, Jr and Boyd N. Pruitt, his brother, David B. Pruitt and his stepson, William “Billy” Anderson, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years and best friend, Ellen, his son, Scotty D. Pruitt (Jillian), grandsons, Rivers, Rocco, and Indy Pruitt, step daughter Mary Kathleen “Katie” Anderson, daughter in law, Rachel Anderson, grandson, Finley Anderson, Jimmy B. Pruitt (Elizabeth), sisters Jeanne Summers, Connie Johnson (David), Wanda Brown (Louis), numerous brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: Christ Church Anglican, Building Fund, 3022 S. Morgans Point Rd. – #274, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29466, or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

The family would like to thank his many caregivers at Roper Hospital Mt. Pleasant, especially his oncology team, and Agape Lowcountry Hospice that cared for Gary.
