POWERS, Francis SPARTANBURG, SC – Francis Persse Powers of 202 Lanford Road, died on February18,2006 in Spartanburg, S.C. after a long illness. Born October 4, 1922 in Charleston, S.C. he was a son of the late Martin Thomas and Marguerite Persse Powers. Mr. Powers was in the Class of 1944 at The Citadel and did graduate study at the University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern University. He had a distinguished career as a naval officer serving in WW II and Korea. He had a long career as the Captain of an oil tanker until his retirement in 1984. Mr. Powers is survived by his wife Mary Sue Whitmire Powers; a stepdaughter Sandra Hodges and husband Andrew of Spartanburg; a stepson Whit Peterson and wife Linda of Pawley’s Island, SC; a brother Joseph M. Powers and wife Dorothy of Mobile, AL; a brother, William B. Powers and wife Norma of Spartanburg; a special cousin/friend Martha Monroe of Laurens. Mr. Powers was a loving father and grandfather to five grandchildren and one great grandchild and a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews in Alabama and South Carolina. Visitation will be held at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church today, February 21, 2006 from 10:00 am until 10:45 am. A funeral mass will follow at 11 o’clock with Reverend Charles J. Snopek officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Timothy E. Powers, William M. Powers, Pete Hodges, Calloway Hodges, Tom Peterson, Scott Arnold, Matthew Burns. In lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church Building Fund, 161 N.
