Fayrine G. Brown, CGC ’99

“You can turn things around in life. You can be successful. Once you get an education, no one can take that away from you. It’s like money in the bank – you can always draw from it.”-Dr. Fayrine Gilmore Brown It is with great sadness and a heavy heart we announce the passing of Dr. Fayrine Gilmore Brown on Monday, September 7, 2018. Dr. Brown was born September 24, 1951, in Texarkana Texas. Dr. Fayrine Brown was preceded in death by her father (Mr. Harlon Gilmore, Jr); and her oldest sister (Mrs. Jewell Gilmore Hall). Surviving are her mother: Mrs. Gursie Mae Gilmore, sister: Mable Gilmore Lowery; son: James Harlon Brown (Renee); grandmother: (Nigel Capers, Tayla Brown, Harlon Brown Jr, and Raylon Brown); and Godmother: Dr. Youlanda Gibbs. She also leaves (1) niece; (5) nephews;(1) great-niece; (2) great-nephews and host of friends and supporters. Dr. Brown was raised and educated in the public school system in Bowie County, Texarkana, Texas. Being black, there were many hurdles she had to overcome. Those hurdles were reduced with the help of her teachers and later ceased by her endeavors. As a child, it could have been very easy for Dr. Brown to fall through the cracks of the school system. She was considered “at risk” because of her family financial struggles. Dr. Brown’s teachers told her that the only way to rise above would be to get a good education. She took the bull by the horns and walked through every educational door that was offered to her. Dr. Brown has served as a director, assistant principal and teacher for South Carolina Public and Private Schools. She also served as a reviewer for the United States Department of Education “Race To The Top” grant initiative program, and as an Adjunct Professor at The Art Institute of Charleston. Her name appears among other outstanding educators on the wall in the lobby of the Educational Building at the College of Charleston. She holds a South Carolina State educator’s certificate with several endorsements, including but not limited to: superintendent, supervisor, principal, director, teacher. Dr. Brown earned her doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University – Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in the area of Education Leadership. She also has a BA (Bachelor of Arts) degree from Bishop College – Dallas, Texas; MAT (Masters of Art in Teaching) degree from The College of Charleston – Charleston, SC.; M.Ed (Masters of Education) degree from the Citadel – Charleston, SC.; and Ed.S (Educational Specialist) degree from the Citadel – Charleston, SC. Dr. Brown is the Founder and Executive Director of Capers Preparatory Christian Academy in Charleston, SC. Capers Prep is where “at risk” children can attend and be given more one-on-one instructions needed to rise above and achieve educational success. Students under her watch at Capers Prep have demonstrated marked educational improvements with 100% of graduates accepted into college programs. This success has been noted by various local, regional and national publications, including a mention in the Wall Street Journal in April 2007. This school is a non-profit (501c3) organization that is operated with donations from sponsors. Dr. Brown is also the founder and owner of Educational Therapy, LLC which was created to give students a chance – a chance to understand; a chance to overcome; a chance to prosper. She witnessed the need for educational consulting resources for children in danger of “falling through the cracks”. She refused to ignore the need and started an educational consultant business. Dr. Brown founded Educational Therapy as a mean for providing a holistic approach to successful lifelong learning for parents, children and schools. She meets the child needs with an arsenal full of educational resources, tools and recommendations. Dr. Fayrine Brown always believed that an education could unlock doors and remove barriers that might have other wise maimed future success. It was her education that made her successful. With her caring heart for all people, she wanted to give all children the opportunity to overcome whatever obstacles lie in their paths and help them succeed by establishing a strong educational foundation. I will try to help open the future to them-I will try to put the world at their fingertips, she said. For her, it was more than helping schools and students with achieving immediate educational goals. It was also about investing in the future – a future for each student, a future for each school sponsored educational programs, a future for our state, a future for our country and a future for our world. She operated with the understanding that a passion for learning stroked today will be the driving force behind tomorrow’s intelligent minds. It is these minds that will shape and mold our future. Dr. Brown has received several recognitions for her service to mankind, such as: — Golden Apple Community Award (Dedicated Services to Children and Parents) — College of Charleston alumni Recognition Wall — Zeta Phi Beta Community Service Award (Dedicated Service to Children and Youth) — South Carolina State Mechanism NCNW Community Service Award (Education) — The Bethune Leonard Section of NCNW Community Service Award (Outstanding Leadership in Education) — Columbia Section of NCNW “Living the Legacy” (Outstanding South Carolinian) She holds membership in the following organizations: — National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) — National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) — Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. — Bishop College Alumni Association — Phi Gamma Sigma (International Professional Society for Doctoral Graduates) at Nova Southeastern University — SC Women’s Business Center (SCWBC) — SC Responsible government (SCRG), board member — Served as Executive Director of SC Association of Independent Schools Serving Minority Children (SCAISSMC) – 4 years Dr. Brown is the author of a book “Steps to Success: A Winning Approach to Serving At-Risk Students”.
