Dr. Frank Maxton Max Mauney Jr., 70, died of leukemia on November 26, 2003 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. A native of Gastonia, he was the only child of Frank Maxton Mauney and Carnelle Worthy Mauney. Dr. Mauney received a BS from The Citadel in 1955 and an MD from Duke University School of Medicine in 1959. He completed his residency in cardiothoracic and general surgery in 1966 and served on the staff as an Assistant Professor until 1970. He and his family then moved to Asheville where he became a co-founder and senior partner in Asheville Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons, PA. Dr. Mauney performed the first private practice to open heart surgery in WNC in 1971 and continued his career as a surgeon for another 24 years. In the six years leading up to his retirement from private practice in 1995. Dr. Mauney participated in the planning, building and opening of the state-of-the-art Owen Heart Center at Memorial Mission/St. Joseph Hospital. In 1996, Dr. Mauney began a second part-time career as an independent consultant, clinical trainer, medical director and traveling proctor for several surgical device companies, traveling to heart surgery centers throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. He also enjoyed a three year position during this as the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at the Asheville VA Medical Center. He maintained his ties to Due university School of Medicine as advisor to the General Alumni Association Board of Directors (1984-1991) and President of the Medical Alumni Association in 1986. In recognition for his service to Duke, he received the distinguished Alumnus Award from the School of Medicine in 1995. Dr. Mauney took great pride in his participation in numerous professional organizations throughout his life, including the North Carolina Medical Society (President 19921993), American Medical Associaton, American College of Surgeons, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association. Additionally he served on many boards and commissions, including the Medical Mutual Insurance Company, the NC Health Care Reform Committee and the AMA House of Delegates. Dr. Mauney was a founding board member and chairman of the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) and also served on the board of The Health Adventure. His promotion of patient care and physician representation through organized medicine led him to leadership roles at the nation and state level. From 1996 to present, Dr. Mauney was elected to two four-year terms on the AMA Council on Medical Service and served as Chairman in 2002. He was a three-time gubernational appointee to the North Carolina Medical Care Commission (1987-1995) and in January 2003, he was appointed Chairman of the State Health Planning Commission by Governor Easley a position he held at the time of his death. In November 2003, Dr. Mauney was awarded the Reginald Harris Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Carolina Medical Society Foundation. Dr. Mauney is survived by his wife, Fran of Durham, NC; and her son, William Green of Montgomery AL; his children, Laura Mauney Foster and her husband, Dan of Cary, NC, Michael Mauney and his wife, Cheryl, (and their baby due in January) of St. Louis, MO and David Mauney and his wife, Kim of Atherton, CA. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; Taylor, Griffin, Kellen, Owen, Aidan and Keiran Foster, Natalie, Maxton and Mallory Mauney. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at All Souls Episcopal Church in Asheville, NC. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Dr. Mauney’s family gratefully acknowledges and truly appreciates the wonderful, loving care and support he received as a patient on the 9100 floor at Duke University Hospital.
