Dr. Eugene Wesley Pate Jr., 74, of Kinston, passed away on December 22, 2009, of natural causes in his home. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Verdelle Butt Pate and father, Eugene Wesley Pate Sr. Dr. Pate was born December 19, 1935, in Kinston, N.C. to Margaret Verdelle Butt Pate and Eugene Wesley Pate Sr. He graduated from the Citadel in Charleston, S.C.; attended medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and completed his residency at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. He served two years in the army and returned to Kinston to practice orthopedic medicine until he retired. He was a mem-ber of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. He loved his dogs, sailing, and being at the family farm on the Pamlico River. His lesser known talents include writing poetry, driving his tractor, dancing and building a functioning sailboat. He was a student of the Civil War; a great story teller; and an avid reader. He is survived by two daughters, Margaret Leigh Pate of Seattle, Wash. and Mary Ann Pate and husband Jeff Sean Greene, of Raleigh, N.C. A memorial service followed by a re-ception will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, December 26 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Kinston.
