Eugene “Gene” Hay Walpole, Jr., 90, of Johns Island, retired owner of Sunnyside Farms and husband of Estelle Hanckel Walpole, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his graveside service on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at the family cemetery located at 2541 Sunnyside Farm Road, Johns Island, S.C. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 14, 2017 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Mr. Walpole was born September 6, 1927 in Charleston of the late Eugene Hay Walpole and Cornelia Porcher Walpole. He was a graduate of Porter Military Academy and attended The Citadel. Gene was a Navy veteran of World War II having served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hancock in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict and served aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Murray. Gene also served on the organizing board of directors and helped in the construction of Sea Island Academy, now Charleston Collegiate. He was a member of the Huguenot Society and life member of the Citadel Alumni Association. He was a former chairman of the Johns Island Planning Committee. He received several Soil Conservation awards for his farm practices. He was a strong supporter of Charleston Christian School and a charter member and elder emeritus of Church Creek Presbyterian Church P.C.A. Gene was an avid boater who loved his farm, but was most of all devoted to his wife, his four children, his eight grandchildren, and his six great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife Estelle and survived by daughters Estelle Rhett Walpole Lee (Burke) and Cornelia Porcher Walpole, and sons Eugene Hay Walpole, III (Anne) and Francis Hanckel Walpole (Patsy). He is survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Katie Lee Huss (Galen), Samuel Burke Lee, Eugene Hay Walpole, IV (Kristen), Katherine Walpole Morbitzer (David), William Ransom Haynie, Laura Porcher Haynie, Francis Hanckel Walpole, Jr. (Charlotte), James Legare Walpole, Mary Katherine Huss, Nathaniel Huss, Rhett Huss, Legare Walpole, Grady Morbitzer, and Caleb Morbitzer. He is also survived by one brother, John Walpole of WadmalawIsland, SC; two sisters, Lucia Welch, of Savannah,Ga., and Mary Allston, of Traveler’s Rest, SC. He was preceded in death by two brothers, PhilipWalpole, and Edward Walpole; and sister, June Dickerson.
