Eugene Hill “Gene” Nettles, of Randolph, Ala., passed away on July 6, 2021 at the age of 91 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Jackson, Mississippi on June 10, 1930, the son of Charlton John Nettles and Aline Oglesby Nettles Boyd. He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church with his loving wife, Mary Nell Anderson Nettles. Miriam Nettles Heintz (David) of Covington, Louisiana and Eugene Hill Nettles of Randolph, Alabama are his devoted children. Gene graduated from the Citadel Military College in Charleston, South Carolina. He spent almost four years in charge of the soils laboratory for the International Boundary Water Commission in Texas before transferring to the Waterways Experiment Station. He used his Civil Engineering degree to pursue a career with Army Corps of Engineers carrying such titles as Chief of Program Development for the Lower Mississippi Valley Division & MS River Commission, Corps of Engineers. He eventually returned to Vicksburg as Assistant Chief of Program Development for LMVD-MRC. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and brothers, C. J. Nettles and Paul Nettles. He is survived by his children; grandchildren, Jacob Heintz (Brittany) and Evan Heintz (Ariella); and great-grandchildren, Liam, Harrison and Lukas Heintz, and Aubree Nell, Camden and Addison Heintz. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to his visiting angels, Lynn Scott and Christy Grisham, and to Amedysis Home Health. A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 9, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Randolph. Pastor David Grisham will officiate.
