Ernest R. Steltzer, 89, of New York, NY, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at Valley View Haven in Belleville. Ernest was born Aug. 29, 1924, in Anderson (Station) Granville, son of the late Walter L. and Edna (Fisher) Steltzer. Before moving to Long Island, N.Y., he lived in Hawstone. While growing up, he spent many summers visiting his grandparents and cousins in Granville and Blacklog Valley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Steltzer, and one great-granddaughter. He graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, N.Y., in 1943. Ernest is survived by his wife, Irene R. (Appleton) Steltzer. They were married on Dec. 28, 1946, in Floral Park, N.Y. He is also survived by: his children, Bruce (Valerie) Steltzer, of Lockport, N.Y., Paul (Nancy) Steltzer, of Geneseo, N.Y., and Kathleen (Larry) Pinkos, of New York Mills, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Ernest enlisted in the army in 1944 with the Corps of Engineers. He was assigned to the 2818th Engineer Model Making Detachment, serving in England and Paris, where they conducted operations at the Theater Army level. He returned to The Citadel where he graduated in December of 1949. His career path included: plant superintendent at American Agricultural Chemical Company; mechanical engineer at R. E. Dietz Company, in Syracuse, N.Y.; purchaser of heavy equipment; and vice president at D. W. Winkelman Construction Company, in Norfolk, Va. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at Ellen Chapel Church, Lewistown, with Pastor Mark Hill officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown. Interment with VFW Post 7011 honors will take place in Lind Memorial Cemetery.
