TUNNELL, Ernest Ernest A. Tunnell, World War II Veteran and long time church leader at Grace Episcopal Church, died in a local hospital on Saturday, June 2, 2007. He was 87. Mr. Tunnell was born in New York City, New York, on March 6, 1920, the son of Rufus A. Tunnell and Anna S. Tunnell. He was a 1942 graduate of The Citadel. Upon graduation from The Citadel, Mr. Tunnell was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, and was engaged in combat service in the allied invasions of Sicily and Italy. Upon his return to Charleston, Mr. Tunnell was active in local business for more than 40 years, with National Cash Register Company, and thereafter with the Sadler Real Estate Company. Mr. Tunnell devoted much of his time and his life to church and community. A member of Grace Episcopal Church on Wentworth Street, Mr. Tunnell served several terms as vestryman and warden. He was a Sunday school teacher, head usher, and boy scout troop leader. For many years Mr. Tunnell chaired the Buildings and Grounds Committee of Grace Episcopal Church. In community matters, Mr. Tunnell served for many years as a poll manager with the County of Charleston and City of Charleston Elections Commissions. Mr. Tunnell is survived by his wife, Harriott Pinckney Moore Tunnell of Charleston and two granddaughters, Kimberly Rene Lybrand of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Patience Ann Lybrand of Lindale, Georgia. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Grace Episcopal Church on Wentworth Street. The family will receive friends and visitors in the courtyard following the service.
