Elaine Bates Smith of Mt. Pleasant, SC, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, July 3, 2014. A memorial service will be held at North Charleston United Methodist Church on Sunday, July 6, 2014, at 4:00 p.m. Family will receive friends after the service in Davis Hall. There will also be a private service at a later date at Eccles United Methodist Church Cemetery in Huger, SC. Elaine was born on November 20th, 1947 in Charleston, SC. A daughter of Marion Dempsey Bates and Harriet Sease Bates, she grew up in North Charleston. Elaine graduated from Columbia College and later received a master’s degree in education from The Citadel. She had retired after working many years in the field of education as a teacher, media specialist and administrator. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, William Michael Smith, daughter, Laurin Smith Collar (William), and granddaughters, Bates Kenneth and Laney Smith, a sister, Nell Bates Beasley, a special niece Michelle Eleanor Beasley, many family members and treasured friends.
