Rhyne LCDR, U.S. Navy (Retired) Ed, to all who knew and loved him, was a humble yet self-assured man. Born and raised in his beloved Mt. Holly, North Carolina, Ed was the quintessential “Officer and a Gentleman”. Ed was an intelligent voracious reader, an expert of world and U.S. history and followed all things politics with a passion. Ed was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather and faithfully passionate gate keeper of his “late in life” love and wife Marisol (Marie). Ed was a reliable, affable mentor at work and play. He exhibited a steady hand and temper in all situations. Ed was loyal, a soft touch consistent leader, dedicated, of unquestionable integrity, hard working and always “standing watch” as the inscrutable gate keeper of every loved one, friend, fellow sailor and his beloved U. S. Navy. Ed held a B.A. in Political Science/Business Administration from Appalachian State University, and a M.A. in Political Science/Foreign Policy from The Citadel. Ed served in various sea and shore duty assignments as an enlisted Senior Chief Petty Officer for 11 years, rising to a commissioned Navy Officer as a Lieutenant Commander Limited Duty Officer (LCDR) and serving an additional 17 years before retiring in 2007. He then joined Herren Associates as their Senior Director of Readiness where he supported various programs at Naval Sea Systems Command at the Washington Navy Yard until his retirement August 31, 2015. Ed’s career encompassed complex weapon systems integration, multiple forward deployed combat operations, information systems administration, personnel and systems management and training, and the entire array of electronics, computer and maintenance. Among his highest achievements, Ed was a recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal. Above all things, Ed Rhyne was a quiet yet deeply caring and loving soul with a quick wit. The world was a safer place because of this man and his service to all. Ed will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to cross his path or shared his life journey.
