Edward Carson Martin , 93, of Charlotte, NC passed away Sunday, December 6th. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lou, and is survived by five children: Sally Kasper, Carol Jernigan (Perry), Jean Grist, Beth Bumpass (Brian), and Carson Martin. In addition, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren are mourning Pops loss.
Ed was a proud Citadel graduate of The Class of 1943. He was a Captain in the US Army while serving in WWII from May 1944 to June 1946 under General Patton. He received the European African Middle Easter Theater Ribbon and his battles included Northern France, Normandy and Rhineland, arriving at D Day plus1. His engineering career began with Van Ort and progressed to Blythe Brothers, JA Jones and Metric. Throughout his career he traveled to Bogota, Columbia, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. After retirement he returned to work with The City of Charlotte and FEMA. In later years he began a rental company at the beach setting up cribs and baby equipment for vacationers. He was a Life Member of Oasis Shriners, receiving his 60 year pin in July, 2012.
His greatest enjoyment was looking over the Atlantic Ocean from his favorite chair at Pawleys Island and being with his family. Ed was known for his practical jokes played on others and the special rapport he had with children and neighbors.
Ed was a member of the Men’s Class of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, teaching Sunday School in the 50’s and 60’s. He was later a member of Waccamaw Methodist Church at Pawleys Island, and when he returned to Charlotte he began attending Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church.
A service will be held Wednesday, December 9th at 2:00 pm at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church. Memorials can be sent to The Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605 or Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church.
