Edward C. Jones ’67

Edward Coleman Jones of Mt. Pleasant, SC, died Saturday March 29, 2008. Ed was born in Brooklyn, NY, October 1, 1943, to Lt. Col. (Ret) and Mrs. Edward M. Jones and lived in Washington, D.C.; Tokyo, Japan; Orleans, France and Seoul, Korea where he earned a black belt in Tong Tsu Do. Ed was a 1967 graduate of The Citadel, Company “K.” While at The Citadel he was a member of the Rifle Team. His Talents contributed to the team winning two National Championships. Ed was all Southern Conference and 2nd Team All American. He proudly served his country as an Army Ranger assigned to the 199th Light Infantry brigade and D Troop, 17th Calvary Division in Viet Nam. Ed was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Bronze star, Air Metal, two Army Commendation metals and three Campaign Stars. Additionally he was awarded the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and a Unit Valor Award. He proudly wore the Combat Infantryman Badge. After military service, Ed spent his career with Johnson & Johnson plant operations in Sherman, TX; Little Rock, AR; Camden, AR; Benson, NC and Lancaster, PA. He later enjoyed messin’ about in boats as a hobby and an occupation, both in Columbia and Charleston. Because of his passion for fun and safe boating, Ed was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 12-3 (Lake Murray) and Flotilla 12-6 (Mt. Pleasant), having recently served as Flotilla Commander, where many improvements were made including recognition for the Flotilla for the most volunteer hours, vessel inspections and the visitors program. He was a Merchant Marine Officer (Captain) licensed by the U. S. Coast Guard, a coxswain, a Plank Owner of the U. S. Coast Guard Sector Charleston. Ed is survived by his wife, Priscilla Jones; sons, Richard E. (Shannon) Jones and Ryan J. Jones of Charleston, SC; and children through marriage, Jim McMahon, of Charleston, SC, Erin (Perry) Hunsicker of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Ryan (Jeanette) McMahon of North Palm Beach, FL. He is also survived by a brother, Jeffrey (Cheryl) Jones of Bahrain and their son, Michael Jones of Charleston, SC; four grandchildren, Coleman and Hannah Jones of Charleston and Christopher and Sophie Hunsicker of Mt. Pleasant and his adopted daughter, Ivanka (Vanya) Angelkovia of Sophia, Bulgaria. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the following: Citadel Class of 67 Scholarship Fund, The Citadel Class of ’67 Rifle Team, The Wounded Warrior Project. www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
