Dr. Edward Hugh Setzer, Sr., of Columbia, SC, cared for thousands of patients during his 37-year medical career. As a physician, he had the privilege of serving Stephens County and Northeast Georgia as well as the men and women of the nation’s military. Dr. Setzer died April 12 at Palmetto Health Heart Hospital following a heart attack at the age of 80. A celebration of his life will be at 2:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel, 4219 Hardscrabble Road, Columbia, South Carolina on Friday, April 18. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 17 at the funeral home. A private family burial will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at a later date. He graduated from The Citadel where he was captain of the Summerall Guards and regimental commander in 1955 and from the Medical College of Georgia in 1963. Hugh practiced Internal Medicine in Toccoa, Georgia for twenty years and in 1989 joined the Veterans Administration. Hugh often remarked that he considered it a great honor to care for the men and women who serve our country, and he had a special admiration for his patients who were World War II veterans. Surviving are his wife of fifty-eight years, Patricia “Pat” Setzer, daughters Ellen Setzer Suarez and her husband Brent Obenour of Falls Church, Virginia and Leigh Setzer of Atlanta, Georgia and son Edward Hugh “Ted” Setzer, Jr. of Columbia, South Carolina; grandson Alex Suarez of Falls Church, Virginia, step-grandchildren: Kyle Obenour and his wife Michelle of Fallon, Nevada; Sarah Obenour and Kate Obenour of Falls Church, Virginia; sister-in-law, Mary “Diddy” Thompson of North Augusta, South Carolina.
