David Bruce Spohn, age 80, of Lake Wylie, passed away on December 24, 2020, in Union County, North Carolina. He was surrounded by a group of caring hospice professionals that ensured his final moments were peaceful, and members of his family were able to share their final goodbyes. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Mr. Spohn was born August 20, 1940, in Richmond, VA, to the late Hubert and Anita Goodloe Spohn. Dave grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania but adored his summers with his Aunts in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. After graduating from Scranton Central High School, he attended The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
David married Mary Elizabeth Deibler on October 17, 1964, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Their wedding marked the beginning of a 50+ year journey that stretched from coast to coast, with the last 20+ years in Lake Wylie, South Carolina. Mary Elizabeth Deibler Spohn preceded David in death, passing away on December 11, 2017.
Mr. Spohn was a decorated US Army officer, an accomplished corporate executive, and a beloved educator. David served his country during three tours in Southeast Asia and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action while in Vietnam. His corporate career was marked by multiple leadership positions with ConAgra Corporation – culminating with his final role as the CEO of Northwest Fabrics & Crafts of Charlotte, North Carolina. David took some of the greatest satisfaction from his last role as an educator. He taught various communication courses at Central Piedmont Community College and Charlotte’s Art Institute for more than ten years. As a gifted storyteller himself, David loved sharing his passion for public speaking and the art of interpersonal communication.
While his accomplishments were many, Mr. Spohn’s most profound legacy is his family. David is survived by his daughter Margaret Anne Bauer (Alex) of High Point, NC., son William Scott Spohn (Sheryl) of Marietta, GA grandchildren Andrew Bauer, Erik Bauer, Carter Spohn, and Libby Spohn. While each will miss him greatly, each will carry memories to last their lifetimes and lessons from him that will guide their path for years to come.
