Daniel Stokes Boyd, age 70, of Charlotte, N.C., completed his earthly journey on Tuesday, September 21, 2021. He was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 8, 1951. He certainly was a creature of habit, as he only moved about two miles from his childhood home. He was the third son of the late Harry Morgan and Eleanor Carr (Babbie) Boyd. He has been a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church his whole life. Dan graduated high school from Myers Park High School in 1969 and attended The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina, in Charleston, SC. There, he distinguished himself as a member of the Summerall Guards and was the Cadet Officer for the Salute Gun Battery his senior year. Dan was in Tango, or “T” Company and proudly graduated in 1973. Dan’s business career was predominantly in wholesale office equipment, and later, into what would become his passion, a Private Investigator focused on Asset Recovery. He was a student of the family genealogy and military history. He loved to travel, whether to Lake Wylie, SC to take his Grady White boat for a spin with the family and dogs, or to Italy or England or France. He could have been a guide for World War II Normandy! His time in the YMCA’s Indian Princess Program was well spent with his daughter, Morgan, or as he liked to call her, “Mogie” or “Button.” Of course, he even brought family genealogy into his Indian name, which was “Yellow Hair”, meaning Boyd in Gaelic. Dan was the best storyteller, sometimes too good. Not a single detail went unspoken. He was a member of the Charlotte Area Citadel Club and the Catawba Yacht Club on Lake Wylie, where he could be found with either his wooden ’57 Chris Craft Cavalier, which he originally disassembled and put it back together (with only a few extra parts left over!) as he refinished and restored the entire boat, or his Grady White, appropriately named “Time Flies.” Whether it was salt water or fresh water, if Dan was on a boat that would float, he was happy! He loved teaching his kids how to water ski in Boyd Cove. He also had a great love of baseball, growing up a New York Yankees fan. His son, Stokes, also shared the same interest, as they enjoyed going to the Charlotte Knights games together. He was a strong fan of the Carolina Panthers since ’95, no matter how frustrating that was at times! He loved attending games with his family or watching from the comfort of his own home with his trusty dogs sitting right next to him at all times. He absolutely adored Dixie and Scout, his yellow Labradors, and I believe it’s fair to say the feeling was mutual. In addition to his wife of 33 years, Mary McKelvey Boyd, Dan is survived by three of his children, Chrystine Weams and Daniel Stokes Jr. (from his previous marriage) and Morgan McKelvey (from his beloved wife Mary). He is also survived by three brothers: Hank (Mary Ann) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Bob (Beth) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and David (Cindy) of Piney Creek, North Carolina; three nephews; four nieces; four cousins; and one aunt. Dan was extremely generous and selfless and always had a willingness to help. He leaves a huge hole in the hearts of his family and friends who were always entertained by his stories and hilarious sense of humor. He truly brought the life to the party. He was beloved by everyone who ever met him. A fantastic father, a great husband and a best friend to all walks of life. No matter the circumstance, you’d always leave with a story of something funny Dan did while you were with him. The family would like to thank all that provided “thoughts and prayers” during Dan’s very brief and sudden illness and the support you gave the entire family, especially his Citadel brothers. In lieu of flowers, please consider The Citadel Foundation (69 Hagood Avenue, Charleston, SC 29403); or Myers Park Presbyterian Church (2501 Oxford Place, Charlotte, NC 28207); or the charity of your choosing. Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. His service will be held at Myers Park Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 22, 2021. A reception will follow the service at the family’s home.
