RICHMOND, Va. – Mr. Claude M. Flaherty, 82, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Rockingham, died March 9, 2005. A member of Chester United Methodist Church, he served on many church boards and committees. He served as president of the Hopewell Manufacturers Association for eight years, president of the Hopewell Chamber of Commerce, director of the Virginia Manufacturers Association and was a member of Gov. Godwin’s Safety and Health Codes Commission. After retirement, he was a charter member of the Tri-Cities chapter of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives), serving two terms as its chairman. He was appointed SCORE district manager for the state of Virginia and served in that capacity for five years. He was a mill streamer for almost 70 years. He was a World War II Marine combat veteran of the Pacific and retired Hercules plant manager. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Lillian Hill Flaherty; two sons, Richard M. Flaherty of Great Falls, Va., and Scott L. Flaherty of Disputanta, Va.; two daughters, Carol Flaherty Megrail of Wichita, Kan., and Ellen A. Flaherty of Austin, Texas; and two grandchildren. Donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund of Chester UMC or to a charity of one’s choice.
