Claud W. Carawan, Jr., of Mechanicsville, Va., passed away July 27, 2013. He was born in Pamlico County, N.C., and has formerly lived in Cypress Glen, Greenville, N.C., Oriental, N.C. and Fairfax, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Isobel Carawan; brother, Bruce Carawan; and sister, Helen Corpeno. He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Burnet and husband, Mark, Claudia Carawan and husband, Ed Hayes; stepson, James Hale; his partner, Sherry Bullock; and grandchildren, James Burnet, Ian Burnet and Veronica Hayes. He was a Citadel Alumnus. He retired LCDR Naval Reserve and served in the Navy during WWII. He retired from Civil Service as Naval Procurement Supervisor, and went to work for Science Applications Incorporated and Advanced Logistics Management as an engineer. He founded Big Vandemere Land, LLC. He was a Past Master of Masonic Lodge Hiram – Takoma in Washington, D.C., Scottish Rite, 32, New Bern, N.C., and Sudan Shriners, New Bern, N.C. He enjoyed gardening, forestry and genealogy. A memorial service will be held August 23, at 2:30 p.m. at Covenant Woods, 7090 Covenant Woods Dr., Mechanicsville, Va. 23111.
