Clarice J. Foster, CGC ’76

Clarice Jones Foster, 95, a resident of Bishop Gadsden for 13 years, died May 23, 2012. A resident of Summerville for 45 years, Mrs. Foster was born December 4, 1916 in Timberlake, NC to Lillian Timberlake and Ira Luther Jones. She graduated from UNC at Greensboro in 1938 with a BA in English. She taught school for six years in Hallsboro, NC, where she met her husband, William Lang Foster, a forester. They were married May 9, 1942. They moved in 1944 to Georgetown, SC where they lived for 11 years and Mrs. Foster taught English at Winyah High School. They moved to Summerville in 1955. She taught English and journalism at Summerville High School for 23 years before retiring in 1979. She continued her education, winning a Wall Street Journal scholarship to study journalism at the University of Georgia and an NDEA grant to study English at the University of Virginia. She received a MA in education from The Citadel in 1977, and was named Summerville School District Teacher-of-the-Year in 1978. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an educational sorority for teachers. Mrs. Foster was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Summerville, a member of St. Margaret’s Chapter, Women of the Church and the Alter Guild. Following her retirement from teaching, she served as secretary of Timrod Library and a docent at Middleton Place. She and Lang belonged to the Summerville Preservation Society, the SC Historical Society, the Charleston Museum and the English Speaking Union. They became members of Grace Church on Wentworth St following their move to Bishop Gadsden. They enjoyed gardening, reading, antiques, travel and geneology. She especially enjoyed her dinner and bridge companions at Bishop Gadsden and her former students who kept in touch with her over the years, some of whom became her foster children. Surviving are two sons, William Lang Foster, Jr. and his wife Donna, of Greenwood and Columbia, and Timberlake Foster and his wife Pamela, of Fort Walton Beach, Fl; five beloved grandchildren, William Lang Foster III and his wife Gretchen of Anderson, SC, Elizabeth Foster Meek and her husband Derrick of Winder, Ga, Noel Foster of Fort Walton Beach, Laurie Traywick and Lisle Traywick of Columbia; and eight adored great-grandchildren, Josh, Matthew, Thomas and Luke Meek of Winder, Ga, and Lang IV, Rodman, Caroline and Conrad Foster of Anderson. A funeral service will be held at the Bishop Gadsden Chapel on Saturday morning, May 26 at 10:30 o’clock.
