Charles Truitt Martin, 90, of Americus, formerly of Shellman, died Friday, September 18, 2009 at his home. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, September 20 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Shellman. Rev. Olan Johnson will officiate with interment to follow in East View Cemetery in Shellman. Mr. Martin was born August 11, 1919 in Shellman, son of the late John Truitt Martin and Caroline Twitty Martin. He was a retired farmer and businessman in Shellman. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shellman where he was a deacon and sang in the Church choir. He was a retired board member of the First State Bank of Randolph County, and was a former supervisor of the Soil Conservation Board of Randolph County. Mr. Martin was a graduate of the Citadel, graduating with the class of 1940. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, retiring as a Major. Survivors include his wife, Mary Laura Starr Martin of Americus, two sons and their wives, Charles Truitt Martin, Jr. and Susan of Dawson, and Thomas Manoe Martin and Sandy of Ponce Inlet, FL, two daughters and their husbands, Tracy and David Barrett of Woodstock and Laura and Jerry Boland of Easley, SC, 3 sisters, Carolyn M. Craft of Gainesville, Elizabeth and her husband Dr. Henry Jennings of Gainesville, and Martha and her husband Ray Ginn of Mableton, ten grandchildren, Caro Lisa Martin, Shelley Elizabeth Robinson (J.D.), Charles Truitt Martin III (Rachel), Mary Katherine Martin, Katherine Sarah Bennett, Jennifer Starr Hawkins (Grant), Emily Tracy Boland, Jillian Leigh Boland, Thomas Manoe Martin, Jr., And Jessica Laurianne Martin, three great-grandchildren, Caroline Isabelle Robinson, Hannah Grace Martin, and Charles Truitt Martin, IV. Memorials may be made to the Benevolent Fund of the First Baptist Church of Shellman, P.O. Box 205, Shellman, GA 39886.
