CHARLES MICHAEL SULLIVAN, a loving husband and devoted father, age 52, of Manassas, Virginia, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas, Virginia. Michael Sullivan was born on November 15, 1955, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. After earning the rank of Eagle Scout in high school he pursued his degree at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, graduating in 1977 with a BA in Political Science. He was actively involved in the Citadel Alumni Association. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army for a tour of six years, during which time he earned the Good Conduct Medal. In 1985 he earned his law degree from the Oklahoma City University Law School and in 1986 he began practicing law with the Womble, Carlisle, Sandrich and Rice Law Firm in Winston Salem, North Carolina. On April 2, 1995 Michael joined the Social Security Administration, where he served as a dedicated employee until the time of his death. He started as an Attorney Advisor in the Huntington, West Virginia Office where he worked until 1998. He then transferred to Falls Church, Virginia where he was employed as an Appeals Officer in the Office of Disability, Adjudication and Review, Office of Appellate Operations. Additionally, Michael served as an acting Administrative Appeals Judge until 2006, at which time he transferred to a position as a Federal Reviewing Official. Michael received numerous awards as an outstanding Social Security Administration employee, including being awarded the Brookings Institute Congressional Fellowship where he received an outstanding commendation from Congressman Virgil Goode for work as his Congressional Aide. Michael was an active member of Manassas Baptist Church since moving to the Manassas area in 1998. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rachel and Charles Sullivan, and his grandparents. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Karen Kingsmore Sullivan, two children, Rachel Michelle (12) and Gregory Charles (10), one brother, Thomas Patrick Sullivan and one niece, Alexis Sullivan. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2008, at Manassas Baptist Church, 8800 Sudley Road, Manassas, VA 20110. Burial will take place immediately following at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Manassas Baptist Church, 8800 Sudley Road, Manassas, VA 20110, or the Charles Michael Sullivan Memorial Fund at the Commerce Bank, 9800 Liberia Avenue, Manassas, VA 20110.
