Lt. Col. Charles DeLeon Cockfield COLUMBIA – Funeral service with military honors for Lt. Col. Charles DeLeon Cockfield, U.S. Army (Ret.), 92, will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church. Burial will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Florence National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to The Citadel Brigadier Foundation Memorial Fund, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409 or St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church. Lt. Col. Cockfield died Wednesday, May 24, 2006. Born in Leo, S.C., he was a son of the late Ben Traxler and Alice Verlene Poston Cockfield. A graduate of The Citadel class of 1934, he retired from the United States Army. He was a member of the Fort Jackson Golf Club, Senior Golfers Association and The Citadel Alumni Association. He was a member of St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth W. Cockfield; daughter, Nancy Lynn Cockfield of Summerville; son, Gregory W. Cockfield of Lexington; brothers, Bennie Cockfield of Springfield, Va., and Richard Cockfield of Birmingham, Ala.; sisters, Ethel Stokes of Florence and Jessie Habib of Florence; grandson, Will Cockfield of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by sisters, Louise DuBose and Grace Knowlton.
