Members of Space Operations Command are mourning the loss of a highly respected senior officer, according to a Monday news release.
The command’s Deputy Commander, Brig. Gen. Chandler Atwood, died Sunday, officials said. No cause of death was given.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Brig. Gen. Chandler Atwood’s passing,” the release stated. “’Fulcrum,’ as many knew him, left an undeniable mark on our command, our service, and everyone he touched.”
A career intelligence officer, Atwood joined the Air Force in May 2001 after graduating summa cum laude from The Citadel, according to his bio. He served in a number of leadership positions, including as the inaugural commander of Space Delta 7, which was activated in 2020. He assumed the role of Deputy Commander of Space Operations Command in August 2024.
Atwood’s awards and decorations include: Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit; Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
“Fulcrum led with grace, mission focus and commitment to this team,” officials said. “Space Operations Command will carry on that tradition moving forward as we carry on his legacy.”
At the request of Atwood’s family, further details will be released “as appropriate, when they become available,” according to the release.
