Carl H. (Doc) Wohlfeil, Jr., ’70

Captain Carl Herbert “Doc” Wohlfeil, Jr., USMC (Ret.), 69, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Marie Oldham Wohlfeil, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, September 27, 2016 after a brief but hard fought battle with cancer. The family will receive friends Sunday in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. His Funeral Service will be held Monday, October 3, 2016 in Old St. Andrews Parish Church, 2604 Ashley River Road, at 10:00 a.m. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow in Beaufort National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Beloved son, husband, and father, Doc was born June 19, 1947 in Frankfurt-Am-Main, Germany. He was the son of the late Colonel Carl H. Wohlfeil and Ethel Rhodes Wohlfeil. Doc spent his youth in various locations, growing up on the Army Bases to which his father was assigned. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in Virginia in 1966, then enrolled at The Citadel in 1967. He left the Citadel in 1969 to join the Army and served his country in Vietnam. He was assigned to L. Company, 75th Ranger Regiment (LRRP), 101st Airborne Division. He received the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart. He was Honorably discharged from the Army in 1971. After leaving Vietnam, he returned to the States and went back to the Citadel to complete his degree in History, receiving his B.A. in 1972. Doc then applied to Officer Candidate School in Quantico, VA and earned his commission in the United States Marine Corps in 1972. He completed The Basic School in 1973, becoming an Infantry Officer. Throughout the various duty assignments that followed, Doc earned numerous commendations and awards. His leadership skills earned him much respect from both his commanding officers and the men he led. He graduated from Amphibious Warfare School at Quantico in 1980, and was retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1988. After leaving the service, Doc continued to work in various occupations before settling into a career in the Import/Export business. He was an employee of Panalpina Charleston at the time of his passing. Doc was a brave soldier, loyal Marine, and a dedicated and loving husband and father. Self-sacrificing to a fault, his generosity knew no bounds. He had a zest for life, and faced each day with a positive attitude and delightful sense of humor. Among his many passions were baseball, history, and books. He loved his Corps, he loved his family, and he had a deep and abiding faith in the Lord. His absence will leave a hole in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his wife, and two young sons, Andrew E. Wohlfeil and Nathaniel A. Wohlfeil, all of Charleston, SC; his three grown children from a former marriage, Mary C. Burns (Patrick) of Marietta, GA, Carl H. Wohlfeil, III (Kathryn) of Albuquerque, NM, Anne R. Fletcher (Frank) of Charleston, SC; brother, Steven Wohlfeil (Ann) of Savannah, GA; sister, Barbara Weatherall of Asheville, NC; and eleven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Old St. Andrews Parish Church, 2604 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC 29414. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston
