Carl Eugene (Gene) Sloop III, of Salisbury, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021 at his home in Salisbury. Born on July 3,1951 in China Grove, he was the son of the late Carl Eugene Sloop, Jr and the late Joy Smith Sloop. He graduated from South Rowan High School in 1969 and received his undergraduate degree from the Citadel in 1973. He was accepted into a National Science Foundation funded graduate program in physics at the University of North Carolina Greensboro where he completed his postgraduate education in physics. He was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in China Grove. Gene Sloop retired from the Rowan-Salisbury School System after 30 years of service as an educator. He began his career teaching science at North Rowan Middle School, and later transferred to Erwin Middle School, and then to East Rowan High School. Gene was later promoted to Assistant Principal at East Rowan School High and held that position until he retired in 2003. Prior to accepting the position of Assistant Principal, Gene served as a teacher of chemistry, physics, earth science, and sports medicine, as well as School Athletic Trainer, Cross Country Coach, Indoor Track Coach, and Swim Coach at East Rowan High School. Gene also served on numerous educational committees at both the school and school district level. He was a member of the East Rowan High School Technology and Science Committees where he was very instrumental in the designing of the science classrooms and science laboratory rooms in the science and math building at East Rowan High School. He was an advocate for the use of technology at the school and was instrumental in helping bring Internet and networking capabilities to the classrooms as well as making educational technology tools available for instruction at the school. As an educator, Gene was the recipient of numerous recognitions. In addition to being an educator for the Rowan-Salisbury School System, Gene served as an adjunct faculty member of Pfeiffer University, where he taught an undergraduate science course. Gene was an avid swimmer, and worked evenings and summers for over 50 years as a lifeguard and certified swim instructor for the J. Fred Corriher, Jr. YMCA in South Rowan and the J.F. Hurley Family YMCA in Salisbury. He also served many years on the China Grove Fire Department’s first responder unit. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Eugene Sloop, Jr.; and his mother, Joy Smith Sloop. Those left to cherish his memory are his life partner, Marty Wilder; and his sister, Rebecca Louise Kabis (Dick). Arrangements: Visitation will be on Tuesday, Dec. 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Powles Staton Funeral Home, Rockwell, and immediately followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at Powles Staton Funeral Home. A private inurnment will be held.
