Betty Gruber Fischer, wife of Richard “Rick” Fischer, Sr., went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday June 13, 2021, at the Medical University of South Carolina, surrounded by her husband and children. She was 65.
Mrs. Fischer was born July 27, 1955, a daughter of Roland D. Gruber and the late Sadie Fralix Gruber. She attended Newberry College, graduated from Baptist College with a Bachelor’s Degree, and later earned her Master’s Degree from The Citadel. For over twenty years she was a teacher at Colleton Preparatory Academy, where she instructed students in many different classes and grades, and was involved with many facets of school life.
Mrs. Fischer was an active member of Welch Creek Baptist Church, where she played the organ for over ten years, and was active with the “Sunshine Sisters”. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved to host all of the family gatherings, always providing delicious meals and desserts. She enjoyed scrapbooking, reading, shopping and taking trips to the mountains with her family. She also enjoyed playing board games and working jigsaw puzzles.
In addition to her husband of forty-four years, she is survived by her children: Mary Ellen Fischer of Taylors, Karen Fischer Mackey (Nathan) of Rock Hill, and Richard Fischer, Jr. (Whitney) of Moncks Corner. There are three grandchildren: Dahlia, Hannah, and Tallulah. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by by two infant brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 Saturday morning, June 19, 2021 at Welch Creek Baptist Church, with burial following in the St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday evening, June 18, 2021 from 6:00 until 8:00 at Welch Creek Baptist Church. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro, is in charge of arrangements.
