Bertram A. Wurthmann, ’45

WURTHMANN, Bert Bertram A. Wurthmann (Dr. Bert) was born in Charleston, SC., on July 22, 1922, and was a lifelong resident of his beloved Sullivan’s Island where he remained an active member of Stella Maris Catholic Church. He was the son of the late George and Amanda Wurthmann. Dr. Bert attended Carlisle Military School in Bamberg, SC, prior to graduating from Charleston High School in 1940. He attended the Citadel as well as the University of Missouri in the ASTP Program during World War II, and graduated with honors from the College of Charleston. During his college years, he played football and basketball at the Citadel as well as basketball at the College of Charleston. At the College of Charleston, he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. At the Medical University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy, he graduated valedictorian of the Class of 1952, where he was a member of Phi Delta Chi fraternity and president his senior year. During his school years, Dr. Bert spent much of his time on the front beach of the Isle of Palms with his family in their business, Wurthmann’s Promenade. As a pharmacist in Wilson, NC, he met the love of his life and bride of 51 years, Polly Dickens Wurthmann. He returned to Sullivan’s Island to open Bert’s Pharmacy, which continues to be a gathering place for locals on the island. Dr. Bert served on the Township Commission of Sullivan’s Island for eight years and was a past president of the Lion’s Club International. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus as well as the Pharmaceutical Association of SC. He worked to maintain his pharmaceutical license until his death. Dr. Bert was a voracious reader as well as an avid sports fan. He so loved his many years as a high school football official. He continued to support his favorite teams, Notre Dame, the Citadel, the College of Charleston and Wake Forest. Dr. Bert is survived by his wife, Polly Dickens Wurthmann of Sullivan’s Island, four daughters, Gayle and Michael Culler of Orangeburg, SC, Gina and Les Lesslie of Columbia, SC, Jonsye Wurthmann and Scott Cutting of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Polly Ann Wurthmann of Sullivan’s Island, and one son, Bert A. (Rocky) Wurthmann, Jr.; two brothers, George W. Wurthmann, Jr. and James F. Wurthmann; and four grandchildren, Amanda Dickens Culler, Ann Tipton Lesslie, Virginia Walker Lesslie and Max Bertram Wurthmann. Dr. Bert touched the lives of so very many. He will be missed more than he could have ever imagined. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Bert A. Wurthmann are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial, Tuesday, September 20, 2005, at Stella Maris Church at 11:00 o’clock. Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sullivan’s Island Park Foundation, c/o the Town of Sullivan’s Island, Sullivan’s Island, SC 29482 or to the American Red Cross, Lowcountry Chapter, 5290 Rivers Avenue, Charleston, SC 29406.
