Dr. B.W. (Bill) Springs, 77, of Monroe, N.C., went to be with his Lord August 5, 2011. He was born July 17, 1934 in Florence SC and was raised there and the Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach. He was the son of James Pearle Springs Sr. and Winifred Gladys Gordon. He graduated from McClenaghan High School in Florence SC and was a member of the state championship football team. He received a BS degree from The Citadel, Charleston SC in 1956 and his doctor of medicine from Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston where he also interned. Dr. Bill Springs served as a Captain in the US Army as Battalion Surgeon for the 21st Infantry in Munich, Germany. Upon returning stateside, he opened a private practice in Bishopville, SC. In 1965, he opened his practice in Monroe and served Union County residents for almost 45 years. He was the first Union County Medical Examiner, a Wingate College physician, and medical director for several nursing facilities. Dr. Springs was a Mason and member of Omar Temple where he served as Medical Ambassador. He actively supported city and county sports programs. He rarely missed Monroe HS games and especially enjoyed watching his son and grandsons play. He is survived by Peggy, his wife of almost 55 years, and three children: Debby McBride and husband Tim, Gordon Springs and wife Brenda, and Carla Mills and husband Tim; six grandchildren: Boe and Nolan McBride, Ryan Mills, David Laney, Amber Helms, and Jeannie Sawyer. He is also survived by twin brother, Jim Springs Jr. of Lakeland, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Monroe (1109 Morrow Avenue, Monroe 28112) or in honor of his son to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (PO Box 1337, Monroe 28111). The memorial service will be held at 3 pm Sunday, August 7, 2011 at First Baptist Church Monroe. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
