Alvin Corbett Smith, 67, of Irmo, born March 26, 1952 in Columbia, SC entered Heaven September 12, 2019. Known by his family and friends as, Al, he was a resident of Irmo, SC at his passing. Al was a 1976 graduate of The Citadel and a proud member of the Summerall Guard. He later also graduated from Midlands Technical College. Al attended and was very involved with Shandon Baptist Church in Columbia prior to joining Riverland Hills Baptist Church when he relocated to Irmo. Al was a member of the Gideons and passionate about spreading the Word of God. He was a Military Ministries Bible class teacher and assistant at Fort Jackson for many years. Al also spread the Word of God overseas going on several mission trips, including Romania and Nicaragua, and was involved with various charities. Al retired from the South Carolina Department of Administration after almost forty years with the state government. During his career he served nine years with the Department of Social Services before joining the Administration department as a console operator in Mainframe Operations. He lived in Japan, France, Turkey, and throughout the United States. His favorite commitments were his faith, friends, family, and helping others when he could. Al is preceded in death by his mother, Nadine Smith, and father, Edwin F. Smith. He is survived by his brother, Thomas E. Smith (Vicki) of Columbia; nephew, Eric T. Smith of Columbia; niece, Laura Smith Metze (Josh) of Lexington; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends. Funeral service for Alvin Corbett Smith will be held Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Thompsons Funeral Home located at 845 Leesburg Rd. Columbia, SC 29209. Rev. David Hilbish will preside. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with the service following at 11:00 a.m
