RALEIGH – Alfredo August Rubens, 83, died, Friday, July 2, 2004. Born on February 16, 1921, in Ithaca, New York, he was the son of the late Luigi and Settimia Rubens. He was a graduate and active alumni of the Citadel in Charleston, SC and served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He married Ruth Baldwin in 1948 and they relocated to Raleigh in 1965, where Mr. Rubens was Manager of Plan Engineering for the building of IBM’s facility in RTP. He retired from IBM as a Civil Engineer after 35 years and was an avid golfer. Mr. and Mrs. Rubens raised five girls together and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998. Ruth preceded him in death in 1999. He is survived by his daughters, Joyce Rubens of Raleigh, Cathy Rubens of Apex, Vicky Otto and husband, Paul, of Smithfield, Cindi Rubens of Kenly, and Vivian Cooke of Louisburg; his grandchildren, Justin and Clinton Otto and Amie and Aaron Cooke; his sister, Aurora Rubens Valenti of Ithaca, NY; and by his nephew, Thomas Valenti of New York City. Mr. Rubens was preceded in the death by an older brother. A funeral memorial mass will be said at 1 p.m., at the church, with interment to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park. Family will receive friends on Thursday, July 8, 2004, from 12-1 p.m., at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church , 11401 Leesville Road.
