Alfred J. Lewandowski, born on January 9, 1933 in Greenpoint Brooklyn, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home in Manhattan on March 9, 2024. He spent his formative years in Albertson, Long Island, where he worked alongside his family in their neighborhood grocery store. He graduated from East Williston High School, where he played football.
He was a proud 1955 graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.. He was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Army. From there, he served on active duty in the Air Defense Artillery, and commanded a Nike battery responsible for the defense of Washington D.C..
After the Army, he pursued a career as a placement consultant, eventually opening his own company with partners in the early 1960s. The company concentrated on placing engineers with electronics and aerospace backgrounds, especially in the then thriving Long Island aerospace industry. He continued in this field until he fully retired about 15 years ago,
Alfred was also active in his Long Island community of Saint James, being a long time member of the local Republican Club. He also volunteered considerable time as a adult leader in Troop 7, B.S.A. in St. James. He ran for, won, and held a position as a Village Trustee in the incorporated Village of Head of the Harbor. He was a regular usher at masses in his home parish of St. Phillip and James in St. James.
He was an avid gardener and fisherman, enjoying summers on Eastern Long Island. He relished fresh clams, which he dug himself. He loved to travel, going all over the U.S., and with trips to Europe and the Caribbean.
Alfred was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan, who passed away in 2004. He is survived by his son, Mark C. Lewandowski, grandson Ethan Lewandowski and daughter in law Katinka
Neuhof of Montclair, N.J. as well as his sister Henrietta and her husband Kenneth Stefee of
Burke, VA. He is remembered by his long-time devoted partner, Barbara Maggio of Manhattan.
There will be no wake. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 371 6th Ave., New York, New York at on Friday, March 15, 2024. This will be followed by interment at Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Calverton, Long Island, N.Y..
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospitalin Alfred’s name.
Alfred will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of honesty, service and dedication to family will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
