Adam Kevin Riley, 21, beloved son of Carol and Kevin Riley, Centerville, died on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, in Charleston, S.C. Adam was a Gold Star honors student at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, where he was completing his third year as an Army cadet. A member of Fourth Battalion, November Company, he was a political science major, a member of the Mock Trial team, and in training for the elite Summerall Guard, a precision drill platoon. In 2007, he was selected for the Regimental Command Staff at the college, and in 2008, for a cadet leadership position in Fourth Battalion. This past April, he was the Army recipient of the Society of the War of 1812 Award, presented annually to the Corps member who has done the most to demonstrate and encourage the ideals of Americanism by both deed and conduct. Adam was a 2006 graduate of Barnstable High School, where he developed a love for history, law and debate. He was a gifted athlete and pitcher for the Senior Babe Ruth and Barnstable High varsity teams. For the past five years he worked part-time and summers at Play It Again Sports in Hyannis. Adam embodied The Citadel’s core beliefs in honor, integrity, loyalty, leadership and patriotism. He had a lifelong passion for boating, swimming, golf, tennis, music, sports cars and the beach. Adam’s friends were the most important thing in his life, and it was always his dream to return to the Cape after college and military service. In addition to his parents, Adam is survived by his brothers, Matthew and Justin; grandparents, Harold and Gloria Polis and Marilyn Brown; Kara Griffin, who was the love of his life; and an extended family of relatives and friends who loved him and will miss him every day of their lives. A wake for Adam will be held on Monday, Jan. 19, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Road (Route 28), Marstons Mills. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 South Main Street, Centerville, with burial to follow at Mosswood Cemetery, Putnam Avenue, Cotuit.
