Achilles William “Bill” Vaseliades, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at the age of 87. He was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina on March 25, 1928 to Eleni and William Vaseliades. Achilles graduated from the Citadel in 1949 with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he joined the U. S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He also served in Kansas City and Chicago before being called back home after the death of his father to run the family business. Achilles was best known as “Bill,” the owner and proprietor of The Deluxe Liquor Store for 68 years. Surviving are his brother, Constantine Vaseliades of Spartanburg; his sister, Maria Vaseliades Papadopoulos and sister-in-law, Joan K. Vaseliades, both of Houston, Texas; his nephews, William Lee Vaseliades and his wife Rosemary of Corpus Christi, Texas, Dean Papadopoulos and his wife Cassidy of Annapolis, Maryland, William Papadopoulos and his wife Pamela of Houston, Texas; his nieces, Helena Papadopoulos Johnson and her husband Thomas of Houston, Texas, Christina Papadopoulos Papandreou and her husband Alexander of Houston, Texas, Eleni Vaseliades Jankosky and her husband Joe of Los Angeles, California; and 11 great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Leon William Vaseliades, and his brother-in-law, Constantine Papadopoulos, both of Houston, Texas. Visitation will be 6:30-8:00 PM Monday, February 29, 2016, with the Trisaigon Prayer service beginning at 7:30 PM, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 697 Asheville Hwy, Spartanburg, SC 29303, by the Rev. George Nayfa. Internment will follow in the Vaseliades family mausoleum in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Pallbearers are William Vaseliades, Dean Papadopoulos, William Papadopoulos, Thomas Johnson, Leon Peter Vaseliades, Tommy Volianitis, Charles Hughes, and Chris Johnson. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Achilles William “Bill” Vaseliades to the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 1107, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
