Eugene E. Roberts III

About the donor:

From a Citadel family. Both father and grandfather are alumni. After graduation he entered the Army and was stationed at For Knox, KY as a Second Lieutenant. In January 1964 he was transferred to Fort Carson, Colorado where he served his tour in the 4th Squadron, 12th Armored Calvary. After his tour ended, he served in the Army Reserve. Had he remained in the Army, a promotion of Captain awaited him; however, he decided to return home to Charleston where he was born and raised and go into the family-owned business - Roberts Supply COmpany - that his great grandfather had started in 1871. He said he wlways regretted the decision to leave the Army after doing so, but felt like he owed it to his family to go into the family business.

Gene had five children - 4 boys and 1 girl. He had always hoped that one of them would carry on the tradition and attend The Citadel, but that did not happen.

He was an active member and volunteer and St. Andrews Church (Anglican) in Mt. Pleasant. He was married in 1990 to Kathryn (Kathy) Blackard Roberts who was born and raised in Mt. Pleasant. He passed away on August 29, 2016 from a heart attack.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was happiest deer hunting in a dog hunting club in local woods. A close second would be when he was sitting in a dove field. He did more hunting than fishing, but did enjoy a good deep sea fishing trip.
