Arthur “Duane” Fender, Jr., of Fork Union, Virginia, went home to the Lord on December 6, 2016. Duane was a living example of God’s word, a beloved husband and father, a strong leader, and a dear friend to many.
Duane was born March 3, 1960 to Kathleen W. Fender and the late Arthur Duane Fender, Sr. of Summerville, South Carolina. He graduated Summerville High School in 1978, Fork Union Military Academy in 1979, and went on to play college football at The Citadel where he graduated in 1983.
Following his graduation from The Citadel, Fender returned to Fork Union Military Academy where he and his dear wife, Lynn Pulliam Fender, raised their two greatest loves, their daughters, Lauren and Lindsay. Col. Fender served Fork Union Military Academy for thirty-three years, most recently as Commandant of Cadets, impacting the lives of many young men.
Fender’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Lynn Pulliam Fender; two daughters, Lauren Reed and her husband Danny, and Lindsay Owanesian and her husband Chris; one grandson who was a delight of his “Pop’s” heart, Macon Reed; his mother, Kathleen Fender; two sisters, Kathy Charpia and her husband Royce, and Lois LeaMond; his nieces, nephews, many other relatives and countless friends.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on December 10th at Jacobson Hall on the campus of Fork Union Military Academy. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 11th at John J. Wicker Chapel at Fork Union Military Academy. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Fork Union Military Academy – Fender Fund or Fork Union Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Sheridan Funeral Home of Kent Store.
