Harry Lee “Bubba” Bauknight, of Irmo, a career Marine and later an ordained minister and chaplain, died Saturday, May 21, 2022. The service will be held at noon Thursday, May 26, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Michael Townsend and Richard Fleming Jr. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service. Masks will be required. Private burial will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
Mr. Bauknight was born Feb. 28, 1937, in Columbia and was the son of the late Henry Manning Bauknight and Louise Forrest Bauknight. A graduate of Dreher High School, he received his bachelor’s degree from The Citadel in 1959 and was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1960. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, receiving the Bronze Star with “V”, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star, and the Vietnam Service Medal with four stars. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring in 1979 and joining his father’s business, Palmetto Hardware and Supply Co., where he worked for more than a decade. Mr. Bauknight was a faithful servant of the Lord and a member of New Heights Church for three decades.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 63 years, Dorothy “Dotte” Bauknight; children Alisia Bauknight Carey, Lee Bauknight (Brooke), Alyson Bauknight, and Amy Bauknight Parler; two grandchildren, Halsey Carey French (Brian) and Cooper Bauknight; two great-grandchildren, Fiona and Finnley French; devoted nephew and caretaker Brian Cunningham; his supportive cousin Stan Tompkins (Joy); numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and dear friend Levona Page.
