George Steele Dewey, III, of Charlotte, N.C., beloved husband of Molly Browne Dewey, passed away peacefully early in the morning on Sunday, December 26, 2021. Born in Goldsboro, NC on September 6, 1945, he was the son of George Steele Dewey, Jr. and Eugenia Jones Dewey Faison, both of whom predeceased him. Steele graduated from the McCallie School in 1963 and from The Citadel in 1967. He was a member of the wrestling team for four years, culminating in The Citadel winning the Southern Conference wrestling championship in his senior year. Upon graduation, Steele was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army and served in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star . Steele was the founder and Chairman of Aston Properties, a real estate development firm in Charlotte. His volunteer efforts were focused primarily on the YMCA where he was a past Chairman of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte, Board Chair of Camp Thunderbird and served as the first Board Chair for Herring Ridge, including Camp Harrison in which he was instrumental in establishing. He was a recipient of the George Williams Award and the 2007 John R. Mott Award for his service and leadership in the YMCA. Steele was a faithful Christian, and he and his wife, Molly, were members of Myers Park Presbyterian Church for more than thirty years. A member of a Bible Study group that met weekly for eighteen years, Steele’s faith was enriched by the knowledge gained in his studies and the deep fellowship with those friends. In all he did, his deep and enduring faith in God was his driving force. He recognized the dignity of every individual no matter his or her life circumstances and greeted everyone he met with a contagious smile. Steele led a life of quiet courage, integrity, respect for others, and abounding capacity to love. Nowhere was this more evident than in his relationships with his children and stepchildren and many grandchildren. He loved spending time with all of them skiing, romping at the beach, dancing, hiking in the mountains, and enjoying family trips. His sense of humor and mischievous, playful side endeared him to all his family and many friends. He loved the outdoors and was happiest when enjoying a rigorous hike, playing golf, boating in the inland waterway or fishing in a picturesque stream.
