Daniel Edward Mengedoht, MD, of Charleston, husband of Marjorie Merritt Mengedoht, MD, died December 26, 2021. He was born September 25, 1932, son of Lanville Henry and Claudia Vincent Mengedoht. Siblings were Claudia (Dr. James) Cain, Lanville Mengedoht, Agnes (Timothy) Street, Ruth (David) Long, Barbara (Tom) Bell, and Patty ( Pre) Ball. He was educated at The Citadel and the Medical College of SC. Following internship, he served in the US Navy, completed his residency in Pediatrics and joined his wife in private practice until their retirement in 1998. They were affectionately called “Dr. Dan” and “Dr. Marjie” by their patients. He served on the staffs of Roper, St. Francis, MUSC, Baker, and McClellan Banks Hospitals and as Chief of Pediatrics at Roper. He was a member of the AMA, SCMA, Charleston County Medical Society, The Medical Society of SC, Charleston Pediatric Society, Academy of Pediatrics, serving on the Health Service Committee, HMO Committee, Community Service of School Health, and as delegate to the SCMA Convention. He served on the Admissions Committee of the MUSC and as instructor of Pediatrics, teaching neonatology for two years. Additional services included the SC Mental Health Board, the Muscular Dystrophy Medical Advisory Com, Charleston County Public Health Clinics, SC Cripple Children Clinics, numerous hospital committees, plus Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Miss Mason’s School, president of the Northbridge Recreation Park, a member of the Ashley Hall endowment Fund Committee, the Breakfast Exchange Club (president), receiving “Man of the Year” award and other honors by state and national exchange clubs. He was a member of the following societies: Carolina Yacht Club, Charleston Yacht Club, Charleston Club, Huguenot, Widows and Orphans (created a Certificate of Membership in 2008), German Friendly (president), Duercher Bruderlick Bund, Arion, and Saint Andrews Society (president). Other memberships were The Society of 1824, Trident United Way, Palmetto Society, Board of Visitors of Kanuga Conference Center, The Citadel Library Friends, SC Aquarium Charter Society, Albemarle Supper Club, The Citadel Donor Foundation, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Chairman of Bell Ringers Tricounty Area, The Summerall Society of the Citadel. With his wife, he established The Dr. Daniel E. Mengedoht ’54 and Dr. Marjorie M. Mengedoht Citadel Scholarship Fund in 2004. While a member of Grace Church, he served as Eucharistic Minister, Lay Reader, Usher, Greeter in The Grace Men’s Group, on Project Go Team, and The Vestry (Senior Warden). He was one of the first participants in Lay Administration of the Sacraments as Chalice Bearer. At St. Philip Church he served in the Tea Room and Tricounty Family Ministry. At Bishop Gadsden Chapel he again Served as Eucharistic Minister, Chalice Bearer, Lay Reader and Crucifer. He moved to The Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community in 2008, where he served on Wellness, Activity, and Fire Marshall Committees, and participated in the MUSC Senior Mentor Program for both medical and nursing students. As Vice President of the Residents Council, he served as chairman of the 2010 Charity Outreach Fund Raising Committee with a donation of 105K to the Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic. He then became president of the Residents Council, Environmental Committee, and Chairman of the Woodshop Committee. He continued service in The Salvation Army, Tricounty Family Ministry and Ronald MacDonald House until two years ago. In 2013, he became a Charter Member of The Roper St. Francis Legacy Circle. He was recognized as a member of the Bishop Gadsden Century Society and Leadership Society since 2004. In 2019, he was granted Honorary Membership by The St. Andrews Society and The German Friendly Society. Children are Monti (Clark) Hanger – Charleston, Danelle (Joseph) Cush – Charleston, Anne Fitch – San Antonio, and Dan, Jr. – Charleston. Grandchildren are Zoe, Marjorie, Judge, Richard Hanger; Desiree Sparks and Anne Cush; Elsa, Celia, Oliver, Elena and Zanna Fitch; and Teddy, Hank and Georgia Mengedoht. Great- grandchildren are Connor, Madeline and Alaura. Arrangements by Stuhrs. Celebration of Life will be private for family. His remains will be interred with his beloved wife, Marjorie, when Jesus calls her home.
