Robert Oliver Dixon, age 86, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, died peacefully at his home in Shoreline, WA on July 15, 2025, with his wife and family by his side after a long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Bob and his family moved many times up and down the East coast until finally settling in Hendersonville, North Carolina where Bob and his brother, Phil, attended and graduated from high school. Bob’s life was marked by his passions. After high school he decided to pursue passion #1 and attend The Citadel, a military college in South Carolina. He graduated with a civil engineering degree in 1961. After Officer Candidate School he joined the Navy. He was an officer on the USS NOA, a destroyer. His tour of duty was extended and brought him to Everett, Washington. Bob then left the Navy to pursue his engineering degree and joined a firm in Seattle where he worked for 3 years. It was in Seattle that he met Gretchen and a year later they were married. Two years later, their son Christopher was born. In his early years of marriage, Bob pursued his passion for racing cars. With Gretchen by his side, he raced the NW circuit. It was exciting and usually fun. In 1972, with the birth of their son, the car racing became too expensive and too demanding. Later on, this led Bob to another passion. He loved sailing and a good friend asked him to crew on his boat which he raced. They sailed many races out in Puget Sound. In 1972 Bob had made a job change and moved to The Port of Seattle where he worked for eighteen years. Then in 1990 he was tired of the commute and hired on at The City of Lynnwood w h e r e he and Gretchen had moved to their new home. Bob worked for the City of Lynnwood for twelve years and decided it was time to retire. He was home for about two weeks when he was asked to work on a part- time basis. In the end he was working 5 days a week an hour a day because he enjoyed working at “The City.” When Bob moved his family to Lynnwood they found their church home at Edmonds United Methodist Church. While there, Bob served as the chair of the Edmonds Food Bank for 4 years. The Associate pastor at that time at church was Jack Olive who led biblical archeology digs to Israel. Jack was putting together a group to go on a dig and that was a passion Bob had. With Gretchen’s blessing, Bob took a six-week sabbatical and went to Israel on a dig. While Bob and Gretchen’s son Chris was growing up, Bob became involved in Boy Scouts and was Scout Master for the troop. He was very proud of his son making Eagle Scout. Because of his interest in Scouting and the troop that was at the church, Bob was the C.O. Rep. between the church and the troop for many years. Another passion was his interest in his Scottish heritage. For 25 years you could find him at the Highland Games in Enumclaw or in Portland as Commissioner for Clan Hamilton. Another passion of Bob’s was his love for his Citadel Alumni Association. He was a member for many years and was elected District Director. He loved showing friends and relatives around the campus when visiting his brother in South Carolina. Bob will be greatly missed.by his wife Gretchen of 54 years, their son Chris and daughter-in-law Callie, grandson Joshua, brother Phil and sister-in-law Laura, sister-in-Law Marcia, 5 nieces: Tina, Megan, Erin, Anne, Katherine, 6 nephews: Bill, Jon, Craig, Matt, Philip, and Ben.
