John M. Evans, ’45

Colonel John M. ‘Bud’ Evans, U.S. Army (Retired) of Colorado Springs, Colorado died on April 6, 2018 He was born in Louisville, KY on June 23,1923 to Richard George and Laureen Marschall (English) Evans. He entered The Citadel in 1941 and served as an ROTC cadet in Murray “Artillery” Barracks with “M” Co and ‘R’ Co. After Pearl Harbor and the declaration of war, joining with many of his classmates, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Enlisted Reserve Corps until called to active duty at the end of his sophomore year. In 1944 he was commissioned a 2dLT from Officer Candidate School. In 1945, after World War II ended, General Charles P. Summerall presented him with a “Citadel War Ring” in recognition of his service and his appointment as a 2dLT in the Regular Army.
Colonel Evans served in many command and staff positions from Battery level through Army level in the Field Artillery. He served with the Ninth Army during World War II in England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland and Germany. He served with the 2d Infantry Division Artillery during the Korean War in 1950 and 1951. At the outset of the Vietnam War in 1964 and 1965 he developed Field Artillery air assault tactics and techniques used by the 1st Cavalry Division Artillery. He was Chief of the Artillery Branch, Officer Personel Directora1e, Department of the Army; and, before retiring in 1973 , he was the Eighth Army Artillery Officer in Korea. Among his many campaign medals and decorations he was awarded the Legion of Merit with three oak-leaf clusters and the Bronze Star with “V” device for valor.
Colonel Evans received his BS in Industrial Management from Roosevelt University in Chicago; he was a graduate of the Army Command & General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Ft. McNair.
Colonel Evans was an active member of the Anglican Church and for decades he has supported their efforts to continue it’s traditions. He was a charter member of The Fellowship of Concerned Churchmen and had an active lay-ministry as sexton, vestryman, warden, verger and delegate at continuing parishes in the District of Columbia, Virginia and Colorado. At the time of his death he was a communicant at St. Aidan’s Anglican Church in Colorado Springs.
Colonel Evans was affiliated with the Society of the Cincinnati; a life member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; a life member of the Son’s of Confederate Veterans; a perpetual member of the Military Order of the World Wars; a life member of the Military Officer’s Association of America; and a member of the The Citadel Alumni Association.
Colonel Evans was married August 28th 1945 to Ida Louise (Anderson).
He is also survived by a son, The Rev. Richard A. Evans (Citadel ’72); a daughter, Nancye L. (Evans) Culbreath; three grandchildren; and, four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by wife, Ida Louise (Anderson); and sister, Kathryn (Evans) Burnup.
Burial at Arlington National Cemetery with full Military Honors to be held at later date.
