Edward Mims Mobley, Jr., MD of Greenwood, South Carolina, husband of Mary Jane Brooks Mobley, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, June 25, 2025, just shy of his 95th birthday. Born June 30, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dr. Mobley was the son of the late Edward Mims Mobley, Sr. and Saline Clark Mobley. Dr. Mobley grew up in Bishopville and Edgefield, South Carolina. After graduating from the Citadel, he attended the Medical University of South Carolina receiving a Doctor of Medicine degree, specializing in Internal Medicine. It was during this time that he met and married his wonderful wife, Mary Jane Brooks. He also served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy stationed in Texas. In 1962, Dr. Mobley moved with his family to Greenwood to join Dr. Wiley Price in his Internal Medicine Practice. Over the course of his medical career, Dr. Mobley served as President of the Self Memorial Hospital staff and President of the South Carolina Medical Association. He was also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and was the 1997 recipient of that organization’s Laureate Award for the State of South Carolina in recognition of his accomplishments in and contributions to his field.
In his leisure time, Mims enjoyed golf, snow skiing and helping Mary Jane landscape the family’s lovely Forest Hills home with terraced gardens. A latter-day Renaissance man, he was skilled at architecture and contracting, drafting plans for his family’s home as well as office buildings for his own and other medical practices. Mims was also a master furniture designer and craftsman, building furnishings for his family, his friends, and his church, often from felled hardwood trees given to him by thoughtful friends and neighbors. He was a world traveler and observer which, in many ways, inspired him in another of his passions – writing. Along with recording his impressions of the historical sites and natural wonders he visited with Mary Jane and other travel companions, he was author of a book of fiction and wrote a number of commentaries published in the Index Journal, the Edgefield Advertiser and the Wall Street Journal. Many folks will also remember his Greenwood Community Theatre performances, particularly “Harvey” and his portrayal of Harry Truman in “A Man of Decision”, the one man play that Mims wrote.
Dr. Mobley touched the lives of many for the better. He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years Mary Jane and his children Saline Mobley Gerber, Carol Mobley Holland (Tom), Jean Mobley Sasser Meisels, and Mims Mobley III (Lisa). Grandchildren: Brooks Gerber (Matt Brown), Taylor Gerber Brown (Elliott), Libba Holland Roach (Brandon), TJ Holland (Kenzie), Hampton Sasser (Andrea), Lane Sasser DeVries (Jake), Mims Mobley IV, Lougen Mobley, and Reynolds Mobley.
