Jackie Dean Penland, 57, of Milton, W.Va., went home to heaven on May 25th. He was born in Asheville on October 26th, 1966 and he was the son of the late Carl and Ruth Penland. He is survived by his wife Melissa Hyde Penland, a daughter Faith Nolan, son Caleb Penland (Jessica), granddaughter Emilia which he affectionately dubbed “Shortcake”, and brothers David (Darlene), Aaron (Teresa), and Erik (Tracie). He was a 1984 graduate of TC Roberson and a 1988 graduate of The Citadel. Dean had a quick wit and a sharp sense of humor that was so uniquely his own. He could always make you laugh and sometimes annoy the hell out of you. There was never a moment he wasn’t pushing boundaries in some way. He was a student of life, always learning and curious about the world. Dean spent many hours giving back to others in need through his mission work in West Virginia. He was a humanitarian who gave of himself and his energy, including his service and outreach with the less fortunate. Dean was an example of a man driven by his purpose and faith in God. He would always challenge those around him to be the best version of themselves. Though he had a tough exterior, his heart was of gold. He would never hesitate to give his last to someone in need. Dean’s legacy will live on forever through the many stories he shared and the memories of those who had the opportunity to know him and the many lives he touched from living through his faith in God. Dean will be remembered for his ability to give everyone a nickname that perfectly captured the person. A Celebration of Dean’s life will take place Saturday July 20th at Trinity of Fairview, 646 Concord Rd, Fletcher. Visitation will be at 12 p.m. and services after. The Reverend Stacey Harris will officiate.
