Albert “Snookey” Boyt, of Moncks Corner, husband of Mary Nell Boyt, passed away peacefully at his home on July 14, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born in Oak Grove, Louisiana, to Albert Boyt, Sr., and Mary Volf Boyt on December 26, 1931. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1950 and from The Citadel in May 1954, with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Snookey was “D” Company Commander and also was in the famed Summerall Guards. Snookey served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1955-1957. After returning from his tour in Germany, he was employed by the South Carolina Public Service Authority (Santee-Cooper) where he worked for 32 years and retired as Vice President-Transmission and Operations in June, 1989. He was instrumental in beginning the Berkeley Camp of Gideons International in 1983 where he served as the first President and remained active in the Camp until his death. He was also a Charter Member of The Berkeley Country Club in Moncks Corner where he was an active member until his health kept him from playing the sport that he loved so much. He was an avid sports fan and was inducted into the Berkeley High School Hall of Fame in 2013. Fall would always find him at the BHS and The Citadel football games. He loved College Football games in the fall and Golf Tournaments at all times of the year. He was a founding member of Grace Community Baptist Church where he was a church trustee. Prior to that he was a Youth Leader and Usher at First Baptist Church for 57 years. He worked with the Boy Scouts and also Little League baseball. Mr. Boyt married Mary Nell Mills Boyt on April 10, 1963, and they proudly raised their family in the home they built in Pinopolis in 1965. Mr. Boyt is survived by his wife; his sons, Johnny (Carroll) and Jamie (Lori); and daughter, Jennifer Abbott (Rob). He was so proud of his grandson, James; and his four granddaughters, Sarah Emily, Caroline, Rachel Abbott Snelling (Nick), and Samantha; and one great-granddaughter, Hadleigh Snelling. He also had many nieces and nephews. Snookey was predeceased by his parents; his son, Jeffrey; brothers, Leon Volf and Steve Spolarich; and a sister, Helen Spolarich Beach. Mr. Boyt’s funeral will be held at Grace Community Baptist Church, Wednesday, July 17, at 12:30 PM. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM, with the staff of Russell Funeral Chapel assisting.
